BRAZIL FARMERS FORCED TO REPLACE SOY WITH COTTON AS DRY WEATHER TAKES TOLL

SAO PAULO, November 17 Farmers were forced to give up on soy to plant cotton or another crops in Brazil’s top farm Mato Grosso due to extremely dry weather. Mato Grosso grows two cotton crops each year: during the soybean season and after the soybean harvest.
COMMENTS:

– Director of state cotton growing group AMPA, Decio Tocantins said: “Due to lack of rain, farmers can switch crops -> the first cotton planting area in 2023 can be expanded. On a regular year, first cotton represents 10-13% of plantings in Mato Grosso but this year should reach 20%. Mato Grosso’s total cotton area will rise by 8% to about 1.3 million hectares in 2023/24. In the south of Mato Grosso, growers typically start planting first cotton from December 1st and in the mid-north from December 15th”
– Alexandre Schenkel (head of the national cotton advocacy organization Abrapa): “Some farmers would consider planting a single crop if soy became “inviable,” a tendency gaining momentum.”
– Jose Fernandes (grower in Sapezal municipality, Mato Grosso): “There are farmers here destroying areas with soybeans because the stand is very low.” “They are preparing the soil for planting cotton or even corn.” These Rain forecast for next week is awaited.
– Claudio Scarioti (another Sapezal farmer): “Some soybeans were looking very bad and hence were destroyed.” It is predicted that soybean production in the region could suffer a loss of 20%.
According to AMPA data, the state produces 2 million tons of cotton lint in a year, or two-thirds of Brazil’s production.
